THE WALLS OF JOHN SCARLAND’S HOME are dotted with dreamlike paintings, vivid and full, with a fluid energy. The beauty speaks before anything else. It doesn’t feel necessary to understand, though they are also deeply intriguing.
Behind me, the window overlooks landscaped gardens. A path curls down to a contemporary wood-clad studio, with jutting out window frames in primary colours and a striking orange sculpture at the entrance.
