New lives for a haven of shelter and healing
Lindsey Shaw-Miller tells how an ancient pilgrim chapel continues to provide spiritual refreshment
THE MAGDALEN CHAPEL ON THE HOLLOWAY in Bath is situated on an old pilgrimage route between the city’s Abbey and Glastonbury. It ran along the Fosse Way, the main Roman road into Bath, now with pedestrian and residential access only. The Holloway passes between steep woodland and a raised pavement. The road dips sharply downhill, passing an old horse trough opposite the Chapel. Now dry, this offered a much-needed drink to laden horses making the descent.
