Aoife O’Driscoll demystifies some of the fears about Artificial Intelligence

Imagine applying for a job for which you are well qualified, and later finding out that you were never fairly considered – due to Artificial Intelligence (AI). Such a horror story seems futuristic, heightened by the recent boom of AI that has overtaken the world since the release of ChatGPT in November 2022. However, such developments had been occurring behind the scenes long before their debut in the public eye. Indeed, this exact instance dates back to 2018, when it was revealed that Amazon had been using a hiring algorithm which had been unfairly favouring male applicants. The historic gender imbalance in this sector meant that the data necessary for the operation of the AI reflected a biased preference for male candidates, and so female candidates were penalised on the basis of their gender alone.
