For my sake, the world was created

Jonathan Wittenberg articulates the dilemma in all our hearts when we encounter people experiencing homelessness

For my sake, the world was created

An ancient rabbinic instruction contrasts the making of coins to God’s creation of the human being. Whereas all the coins emerge identical from the same mint, God fashions every person in the same mould so that we are all born equal, yet manages to make each one of us unique. Therefore, since all of us are special and each of us experiences life in a slightly different way, every one of us is entitled to say, ‘For my sake the world was created.’ In other words, we must respect every person’s individuality, their particular perspective and
their irreplicable worth.
