Divine Obedience

Holly Anna Petersen of Christian Climate Action says that ethics looks different in the climate emergency, and makes the Christian case for direct action in the form of civil ‘disobedience’

Divine Obedience

I was not raised in a Christian household. I became a Christian when I was around 20 years old. Part of the draw for me was the wonderful challenge it set out. While society glorifies the accumulation of wealth, the Bible tells us that ‘it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God’ (Mark 10:25). Instead of self-promotion, the Bible instructs us to speak up for, and ‘defend the rights of the poor and the needy’ (Proverbs 31:9). The thought of trusting in God instead of earthly possessions, loving your neighbour instead of focusing on the self, painted a striking and beautiful alternative way of being, which puts justice first.
