IT’S THE NIGHT OF 5 JANUARY and across Spain children are putting out their shoes, hoping they’ll wake on el Día de Reyes – Kings’ Day – to find them overflowing with the gifts they requested in letters to Gaspar, Melchior and Balthazar. Whether they sleep or not might depend on how many sweets the kings threw at them during La Calbagata – an exuberant and wonderfully chaotic procession that takes place in every Spanish town and city on the eve of this most important of national celebrations.
