PETER IS A SIGNIFICANT FIGURE in all four Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles. He is one of the first disciples to be called. He was with Jesus throughout his ministry and, together with James and John, accompanied Jesus on some key occasions (e.g. Luke 9:28-36). Jesus speaks of building the Church on Peter the Rock (Matthew 16:18) and he emerges as one of the two great figures of the earliest church. Peter models for us both discipleship and leadership, growing through his failures as much as through his bold acts of faith.
