FROM THE MIDDLE OF NOVEMBER, shops, media and advertising collude to convince us that Christmas is magical and full of joy and fulfilment. Cares are banished and laughing children reinforce the message that sadness and anxiety have no place in the festivities. The perfect Christmas sold to us by advertisers or Instagram posters is unlikely to happen, but we still try our hardest to plan so that we make memories for our family and friends. Matching novelty pyjamas, overdecorated Christmas trees, traditional games and more food than anyone really needs are all thrown into the mix.
