On angels’ wings

Cath Newson shares the story of an angelic response to the COVID-19 pandemic

On angels’ wings Cath Newson

AS HEXHAM’S PARISH CHURCH, at the heart of the marketplace, the Abbey wanted to offer the community a space to commemorate those who had been affected by the pandemic as we emerged from lockdown in spring 2021. In March, Hexham Abbey was awarded funding from the Cultural Recovery Fund and wanted to deliver a reopening event that would attract visitors back in a COVID-safe manner, whilst recognising that the pandemic was still ongoing. As we slowly reopened following a turbulent 2020 and start of 2021, we realised people had been affected by this in more ways than we ever could have originally anticipated. We wanted to provide people with an opportunity to show their appreciation for people who had helped to get them through the pandemic and also to remember the individuals whose lives had been changed, either by isolation, separation or loss of a loved one.

meditation

Come away, my beloved

If I choose to hide you away, it is for a reason.
I have brought you to this place.
Drink in the silence. Seek solitude.
