Looking back, you seem to have achieved more than many people could dream of: a happy family, successful career, ‘retiring’ at 37, a CBE, running for London Mayor... Has life always gone your way?

Not at all! I come from a family of ‘twice migrants’ and for a very long time, every step of our journey felt like climbing a mountain. Being an immigrant in London in the late 1960s was sometimes a frightening experience and it often seemed all my dreams were being thwarted. Whether getting funding for studies, finding work or struggling to progress my career, doors closed on me left, right and centre.
