ISRAEL HAS SEVERAL SITES associated with the prophet Elijah. Elijah was a complicated character: principled, brave and sometimes reckless. Eventually, he learnt that the best way to encounter the Divine was in the “small, still voice”.
Rabbi Dr Alon Goshen Gottstein was driving past some of the sites associated with Elijah when he had his moment of clarity that would change his life. Earlier in the day, a Jewish student had asked Alon in what framework she could discuss Christianity with a Christian. For Alon, it was a bigger question. In what framework, anywhere, could people of faith discuss their theology with one another, in an atmosphere of mutual respect and a deep desire to know the other?
