I STARTED WRITING MUSICALS out of necessity. As Head of Music at Aston Manor School, where we had a choir of about 120 singers, I encouraged SATB (soprano, alto, tenor and bass) singing, with members of staff helping to hold the parts. There was an Easter concert coming up, we needed  new material, so my first musical Jerusalem Joy (1973) was born.
