THE POINT IS NOT THE POINTS the point is the poetry. So goes the catchphrase taught by many a poetry slam host introducing the rules of the night to the audience. And yet the points, particularly the competition element of these slams, has led to them catching on all around the world ever since construction worker Marc Smith hosted the first slam in Chicago in 1986 as a way of claiming poetry back for the people.
