When Jesus came to earth it wasn’t for consumerism, spending beyond our means and buying ‘stuff’ with no eternal value. Jesus came to be the gift to humanity from our Creator and all we had to do was receive him:

For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6
