Home: the quest to belong
Jo Swinney | Hodder & Stoughton (2018)
Jo Swinney’s life has prompted her to reflect on what ‘home’ means. This book is wide-ranging in its interpretation of that word. In each chapter, she considers a different aspect of home, such as family, country, neighbourhood, house and church. All these things, to Jo, represent some aspect of home, at different stages in her life. There are also times when home is absent, so there are chapters on “My home is not here” and “I have no home”. Each contains some historical and autobiographical detail and then a biblical reflection on that. For example, a chapter on the author’s experience of boarding in England whilst having a family home in Portugal is mirrored by David’s experience leaving Israel to seek a better education in Philistine territory.
