While shepherds watched their flocks by night

While shepherds watched their flocks by night

Voice 1

Read Luke 2:8-18

Sing

While shepherds watched
their flocks by night,
all seated on the ground,
The angel of the Lord came down
and glory shone around.

Voice 2

They had settled down for the night, their flocks were close by with watchers in place to guard them. It was, they thought, just like any other night. Maybe they discussed the weather as they pulled their cloaks tighter around them and prepared for sleep. Living as nomads, seen as outcasts, with not much chance to wash themselves or their clothes, they were probably a smelly bunch. But that was what their lives were like. They were ignored by most, despised and looked down on, never welcome as guests, even though lamb was on most people's tables for meals.
