Prayer focus: New life, ancient symbol

Jennifer Pick explores how the ancient verses 'O Antiphons' speak to us in Advent

O Tree of Jesse, by Todd Pick

THERE IS SOMETHING about the mystery and beauty of Advent that makes us breathe in prayer and breathe out song.

We gather in dimly lit spaces during this cold, dark time to eagerly await the light that dawns within our very souls - warming us from the inside out. We return to our ancient roots, symbols and chants. We join in the refrains of Hannah, David, Zechariah, Simeon, Anna, Elizabeth and Mary - not to mention the angel choruses. We allow ourselves to believe, if only for a moment, that if we can sing of a world where justice reigns and the lowly are lifted, then our souls can "magnify the Lord" and our spirits can "rejoice in God [our] saviour".
