Thirty or forty years before he met the Magi, Herod led an army through Antioch, coming to the aid of his ally, Marc Antony. After the successful conclusion of that business, Antony sent for Cleopatra to join him in Syria. And in 37 or 36 BC, amidst great controversy, Cleopatra of Egypt was married to Marc Antony of Rome in the backyard of his then staunch ally, Herod the Great.
