THE PAST 40 YEARS have witnessed the emergence of new monastic communities springing up across Europe and North America. They draw inspiration from the monastic tradition but are fi nding new and fresh ways to express that vision in a changing, emerging post- Christendom Western society.
Many such communities have found inspiration in the writings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer who, in 1935, wrote the following in a letter to his brother:
