Talking Justice: Singing for freedom

Liberty Verity* tells the story of the song Free Asia Bibi and the woman who inspired it

Talking Justice: Singing for freedom BRITISH PAKISTANI CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION/OOBERFUSE

A FILTHY, DARK CELL is somewhere you imagine a terrible criminal would end up, not a hardworking middle-aged mother of five. But that is the story of Asia Bibi and the more I hear about it, the more I have to ask myself - who's committed the crime here?

Rewind to June 2009: Asia Bibi is working in a field full of Muslim women. She uses a bowl to fetch water and is then accused of contaminating the water supply. Five days later the same Muslim women complain to a cleric and this prompts a mob of people to use the inane excuse of blasphemy to beat the living daylights out of her, abuse her and strip her naked. When one of Bibi's daughters takes clothes for her mother and tries to protect her, the same is done to her.
